The Asbury Center for Nutrition

We are pleased to announce the opening of the Asbury Center for Nutrition located at 1436 Bennett Avenue. This has been the location of one of several community gardens maintained by Asbury but now it is the site where a 96×30 foot high tunnel or hoop house was constructed by Nifty Hoops of Ann Arbor with community help. This new structure will be used both for growing nutritional produce for the community but also as a center for experiential education on the subject of nutrition as well as others. We have big plans for this center and we need your support and prayers.

This center is one part of Asbury’s response to the water crisis in Flint. Asbury has been a Water Resource Center since December providing bottled water in addition to filters, other personal items and food. “Nutrition is an important part of our strategy to combat the negative affects of lead,” notes Jim Craig, Board Chair at Asbury CDC. “The Asbury Family Center has been an advocate for nutrition in our community for the past seven years, but this is our most ambitious project ever. I am excited about the possibilities for our community coming together to not only offer short term relief by offering water and filters, but to be a part of a longer term solution,” says The Reverend Dr Tommy McDoniel, Pastor of Asbury. This center is a part of the vision that God has given to Pastor Tommy for a transformed neighborhood.

Asbury is thankful for the generous in-kind donations and funding that made this nutrition center possible, including a grant from United Way, flowers and perennials from Walker Farms, volunteers and garden materials from Taking-it-to-the-Streets, a grant from the UMC Crossroads District Urban Ministry Committee, the USDA, Knoblocks Hardware and fruit trees and grapevines from Bundschuh Landscape Center.
